Sponge dosa is made of rice and buttermilk, very soft and yummy to taste. This is an excellent breakfast dish.
Ingredients:
- Rice (2 cups)
- Rice flakes/pressed rice (1 cup)
- Buttermilk ( 4 cups)
- Salt as per taste
- Cooking soda (a pinch)
Method:
- Soak rice, rice flakes / pressed rice and butter milk overnight (8 – 10 hours)
- Remove the excess buttermilk and grind them to make a smooth paste. Add salt as per taste and cooking soda and mix well.
- Heat 1 tsp of oil in a pan, add 2 scoops of batter and give it a pancake shape and cook on both sides.
Soft and fluffy sponge dosa is read to be served with all types of ginger chutney, coconut chutney or any other chutney

Dear Veena
Very nice recipe and want to try it. I note that no Udad dal is used,,that is interesting! But how do I get butter milk? It has been ages I fermented malai for extracting butter at home and drink the butter milk with grounf green chili and salt in it. Can I use curd, if so how much water I add for one cup of curd..
Have a nice weekend….you are a great cook indeed.
Hi Ushnish, I like to add 5 cups of water to 1 cup of curd as it is easy. Hope you try the recipe
Veena, Is it thin rice flakes or thick rice flakes ?
